Three novice climbers from Roseville became stranded in Mud Creek Canyon on Mount Shasta after relying on Google's AI assistant, Gemini, for their climb, due to insufficient supplies and route errors.

Climb Planned with AI Guidance

According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office, three novice climbers from Roseville relied on Google's Gemini AI tool for their climbing plan, route recommendations, and the amount of food and water to bring along.

Late Summit Arrival and Wrong Route

Leaving their campsite early Sunday morning, the climbers reached the summit seven hours past the recommended noon turnaround time, took a wrong turn on the way back, and were forced to spend the night in the canyon.

Injury and Rescue Operation

The situation worsened when one of the climbers sustained a knee injury; U.S. Forest Service climbing rangers and search and rescue volunteers reached the climbers on Monday morning.
