Artificial intelligence startup Thinking Machines, founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, is in talks for a new $1 billion funding round to be led by Accel.
Funding Round and Valuation Details
Artificial intelligence lab Thinking Machines, founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, is holding discussions to raise $1 billion at a valuation of at least $40 billion.
Existing investor Accel is reportedly in talks to lead this new funding round.
Financial Status and Revenue Rates
The company's annual revenue run rate is reportedly over $100 million, and this financial metric indicates a high revenue multiple for the $40 billion valuation.
Meanwhile, representatives for Accel and Thinking Machines did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the matter.
Past Investments and Product Developments
The startup previously completed a massive $2 billion seed funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from Nvidia, GV, Lightspeed, and Conviction Partners.
In July, the company introduced Inkling, an open-weight model that charges usage-based compute fees for adapting models with proprietary data via the Tinker platform.
Founding Team and Departures
Thinking Machines' previous massive investment was largely based on the background of Mira Murati and former OpenAI researchers who joined her.
During this process, the company experienced some high-level departures, with some co-founders such as Lilian Weng and Luke Metz returning to OpenAI.
