On Sunday, more than fifty colleagues, former students, and admirers gathered to celebrate his extraordinary career and reflect on the questions he has tackled.
The event, held in the Covel Grand Horizon Ballroom, featured sessions addressing artificial intelligence, causality, Jewish identity, and coexistence.
Academic Career and Contributions
Judea Pearl serves as a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, where he has been on the faculty since 1970.
Known for his pioneering work in probability theory and causality, Pearl developed Bayesian networks that enable computers to model complex relationships.
Turing Award and Scientific Legacy
The mathematical causality framework he developed provided researchers in statistics, medicine, epidemiology, economics, and the social sciences with powerful tools.
These groundbreaking contributions earned him the A.M. Turing Award in 2012, one of the most prestigious accolades in the computer science world.
Social Works and Foundation
In addition to computer science, Pearl has written on Jewish identity, antisemitism, and coexistence, publishing the book Coexistence and Other Fighting Words in 2025.
To keep alive the memory of their son Daniel Pearl, who lost his life in 2002, they established the Daniel Pearl Foundation, continuing to support journalism and cross-cultural understanding.
