Approaching the end of his term, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized in an interview that international cooperation and reforms are essential against global geopolitical divisions, a growing sense of impunity, and existential threats such as artificial intelligence, the climate crisis, and inequality.
End of Term and Hope for the Future
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres evaluated the future as he prepares to complete his nearly decade-long term at the end of the year, in an interview conducted at the UN headquarters in New York.
He stated that if governments cooperate to reduce conflicts, combat inequality, and address issues like artificial intelligence, the coming years hold hope.
Existential Threats and Global Divisions
Speaking ahead of the annual UN General Assembly meeting, Guterres noted that the world faces at least three major existential challenges: unregulated artificial intelligence, rapidly worsening climate change, and inequality fueling instability.
Pointing out that paralysis in the Security Council and major geopolitical divisions have created an atmosphere of impunity, Guterres expressed that this situation increases conflicts and global economic hardships.
Institutional Reform and International Cooperation
He emphasized that institutions dating back to the World War II era, such as the UN Security Council, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank, must undergo a comprehensive structural overhaul to reflect 21st-century realities.
Noting that ongoing crises and violations lead to global deaths, destruction, and economic difficulties, he recorded that international cooperation is inevitable to overcome these challenges.
Artificial Intelligence and Financial Challenges
He called for international cooperation, transparency, and multilateral guardrails against the threat of artificial intelligence.
Stating that despite the financial difficulties experienced by the United Nations, operations are maintained thanks to reforms and strict spending controls, Guterres also noted that he is preparing for a meeting with US President Donald Trump.
