A major disaster occurred as a result of the sinking of the passenger ferry named Filo Jet operating on the TRNC Kyrenia-Mersin route. In the incident, 12 people lost their lives while 16 others went missing, and the investigation process regarding the accident continues.
Negligence Allegations by Passengers
Citizens who survived the accident stated that they warned the captain and told him they needed to turn back, but no precautions were stubbornly taken. These statements brought the captain's negligence in the incident to light.
Captain's License Obtained from Honduras
Investigations revealed that ferry captain Mustafa Öz obtained his captain's license from the South American country Honduras and that the document was extended until 2029.

Zafer Akbulut, President of the Association of Ocean-Going Ship Captains, emphasized that becoming an ocean-going ship captain in Turkey requires 4 years of education and a period of about 10 years.
Akbulut stated that Honduras licenses are sold for money like a commercial establishment without the need to travel to the country, and that shipowners prefer these individuals because they work cheaply.
