Award to FREA in Trabzon Culture and Art Center Competition
The architectural design prepared by the FREA team for the Culture and Art Center competition in Trabzon won the 5th honorable mention award as a result of the jury evaluation.
The innovative design developed by FREA for the Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality Culture and Art Center National Architectural Project Competition was deemed worthy of the 5th honorable mention award.
Main Purpose and Location of the Project
Referencing Trabzon's ancient name Trapezous, the design aims to reintegrate a piece that has long been disconnected from the city. The competition area is located right between important historical and natural focal points such as the Zağnos Valley, Atapark, and the Gülbahar Hatun Complex.
Architectural Approach and Layout
While the entire dense building program is pulled beneath the topography, urban life and public activities are brought entirely onto a brand-new ground level. Through this strategy, the physical presence of the building within the city is minimized, bringing the public space to the forefront.
Program of Requirements and Public Spaces
The dense program of requirements, including two 400-seat auditoriums, a black box, foyers, workshops, and administrative units, is resolved underground. Thus, a light, permeable, and public green plateau is created above ground.
New Value Brought to the City
This original architectural approach aims to endow the city of Trabzon with a brand-new culture square and strengthen urban integration by elevating public life above the ground floor.
