Marking the 20th anniversary of the Istanbul Research Institute, the "Behind the Camera of the Republic" exhibition at the Pera Museum sheds light on Istanbul's social diversity and visual memory between 1920 and 1950.

Purpose and Scope of the Exhibition

The Pera Museum has opened the "Behind the Camera of the Republic" exhibition to art lovers, prepared for the 20th anniversary of the Istanbul Research Institute.

Curated by İdil Çetin and Ahmet Ersoy, the selection approaches the period's social diversity and visual memory from different perspectives.

Source of the Visual Archive

The exhibition consists of striking images selected from the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation Photography Collection Press Photographs Archive.

The visuals in the selection were meticulously prepared and finalized from the first group, which consists of 12,586 glass and 8,097 acetate negatives.

Historical Period and Life

The exhibition offers the opportunity to look at the Istanbul of that era from an unusual perspective during the period spanning from the 1920s to the early 1950s.

The daily life of the person on the street, the changing rhythm of the city, and its spaces are brought together with a wide audience thanks to this special selection.

The Harsh Face of the News World

Featuring frames that never made it onto newspaper pages, the exhibition reflects the true face of the press world and events of the era.

Elements such as accidents, fires, crime scenes, and courthouse corridors clearly reveal the harsh face of the news world of that period.

Archive History and Visitor Information

Digitization and preservation work on the archive, which was acquired by the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation in 2011, was completed in 2013.

The "Behind the Camera of the Republic" exhibition can be visited at the Pera Museum until March 28, 2027.
