Communications Director Burhanettin Duran: Turkish TV series symbolize a new era in the global order

Speaking at the event titled "The Global Narrative of the Turkey Brand: Turkish TV Series" organized by the Presidency's Directorate of Communications, Communications Director Burhanettin Duran shared with participants the importance of the rise of Turkish TV series on the global stage and the economic scale they have reached.

Multi-Centered Global Narrative

Presidential Communications Director Burhanettin Duran emphasized that the rise of Turkish TV series is not only a soft power success for Turkey, but also an indicator of the transition from a single-centered global narrative order to a multi-centered world story.

Historical Process and Western Hegemony

Stating that cinema and television were predominantly produced by the West in the past century, Duran noted that this situation left permanent marks on the lives of individuals everywhere and that the silver screen served propaganda.

Billions of Reach in Over 170 Countries

Conveying that Turkish TV series today reach over 1 billion viewers in more than 170 countries, Duran stated that series exports, which were around 10 million dollars at the beginning of the 2000s, have now exceeded 1 billion dollars.

Foreigners' Desire to Learn Turkish

According to a field research conducted in cooperation with the Yunus Emre Institute and RTÜK, it was determined that 81 percent of the 5,000 foreign participants learning Turkish started this process by watching Turkish TV series.

Original Stories and Anatolian Heritage

Stating that instead of the continuous repetition of stories of the same genre, different approaches should be taken toward Anatolia's rich story heritage, history, and literature, Duran encouraged the sector to turn toward more original projects.
