Herakles Gate and mythological reliefs discovered in Side Ancient City
In the studies carried out by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, a monumental gate and depictions of gods dating back to the 2nd century AD were brought to light on the street.
During ongoing excavation works in the Side Ancient City of Antalya's Manavgat district, the monumental Herakles Gate, depicting the mythological adventures of Herakles, was brought to light.
Works Within the Scope of the Heritage for the Future Project
Excavation activities continue in the Side Ancient City located in Antalya's Manavgat district within the framework of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's Heritage for the Future Project.
Uncovering of Street B and the Stoa Structure
The stages of excavation work carried out on the 390-meter-long Street B, extending from the northwest corner of the Gymnasium to the East Gate, have been completed.
A stoa located on the northern edge of the street dating back to the 2nd century AD and numerous rooms behind this structure were uncovered in the excavation area.
Bishop's Palace and Architectural Changes
It was emphasized that the street underwent significant architectural changes when it was included in the Bishop's Palace complex in the 5th century AD.
It was stated that new monumental entrances were built on the stoa during this period and these structures shed light on the history of the region.
Herakles Gate and Mythological Reliefs
It was stated that the most striking structure among the newly built monumental entrances is the Herakles Gate.
In addition to the reliefs depicting the Twelve Labors of Herakles, depictions of gods such as Athena, Zeus, Artemis, Hygeia, and Tyche were identified on the gate.
