Historic Muammer Karaca Theatre Reopens After Restoration
Closed since 2012 and restored by İBB Heritage, the historic Muammer Karaca Theatre has reunited with art lovers through an organized ceremony.
Following comprehensive restoration works carried out by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Heritage, the historic Muammer Karaca Theatre, closed since 2012, has reopened its doors with an enthusiastic ceremony.
The Rebirth of a Historic Venue
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has brought the historic Muammer Karaca Theatre back into service through restoration works carried out by İBB Heritage, after being closed since 2012. Municipal officials, members of parliament, and numerous guests from the art world attended the opening ceremony of the cultural venue located in Beyoğlu.
New Facilities and Theatre House
Within the scope of the works, the original texture of the structure was preserved while a new main stage with a capacity of 300 seats was created. Additionally, the four-story masonry section dating from the 19th century was transformed and made available for independent theatres under the name Theatre House.
Cultural Memory and Opening Event
A documentary screening depicting the history of the theatre was held at the ceremony, followed by the staging of a play titled In the Footsteps of Muammer Karaca. Protocol speeches drew attention to the unique place of the structure in Istanbul's cultural memory.
Upcoming Period Projects
IMM officials stated that efforts in the fields of culture and art will continue, announcing that the Reşat Nuri and Haldun Taner stages will also be reunited with the residents of Istanbul in 2027.
