Fire and Restoration Process
The historic Tophane Fountain, known as Istanbul's fountain with the highest walls, had suffered extensive damage approximately 6 months ago due to a fire started by a homeless person trying to keep warm.
Following this incident, the suspect was arrested and comprehensive restoration work was initiated on the fountain by teams from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Cleaning Works Had Been Completed
As part of the meticulous work carried out by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism teams, the soot and grime layer formed on the historical structure due to the fire was completely cleaned.
However, this valuable historical structure, which underwent a restoration process, unfortunately faced negative incidents once again in a short time.
Graffiti and Trash Attack Draws Reaction
Immediately after the restoration, the historical structure became the target of unidentified individuals, suffering graffiti attacks while garbage was dumped into the fountain's basin.
The rapid re-vandalization of the historical artifact drew great public backlash, bringing the issue of protecting cultural assets back to the agenda.
