Muammer Karaca Theatre Reopens After a 14-Year Hiatus
The historical Muammer Karaca Theatre, closed in 2012, has reunited with art enthusiasts following comprehensive restoration and reinforcement work carried out by İBB Heritage.
As part of cultural revitalization efforts in Beyoğlu, one of Istanbul's historical centers, the Muammer Karaca Theatre—which was closed in 2012 and left neglected for years—reopened its doors on September 25 with a ceremony.
Cultural Revitalization Process in Beyoğlu
Renovation and rescue efforts in the arts sector continue unabated along Istiklal Avenue and its surrounding areas. Within this scope, new cultural venues are being brought to the region.
In addition to various projects implemented in the past, many historical buildings are being restored and reintegrated into the city's cultural life.
Restoration Works on Historical Buildings
The 148-year-old historical Metrohan in Tünel Square was restored by İBB Heritage and transformed into the Metrohan Memory Museum and Culture Complex.
Casa Botter, which draws attention with its Art Nouveau details, was also reinforced against earthquakes, its ground floor was opened to serve as an exhibition hall, and the Istos Stage met with art lovers.
The Reopening of Muammer Karaca Theatre
One of the most important steps in this artistic renewal process was the revival of the Muammer Karaca Theatre, which had been closed in 2012 on the grounds of earthquake risk.
Following meticulous work carried out by İBB Heritage and İBB Culture, the theatre reopened its doors 14 years later with a ceremony held on September 25.
Historical Ruins and Opening Events
At the opening, it was stated that ruins of the French Court were discovered in the lower part of the structure.
The reopening began with an exhibition by Mengü Ertel, while the ceremony continued with a play prepared by the Istanbul City Theatres.
Features and Goals of the New Venue
Designed with a 300-seat main hall, a rehearsal stage, and a Theatre House concept, the venue aims to provide a production space for independent theatre companies.
