New contemporary art center opens its doors in Uzbekistan
The Centre for Contemporary Arts Tashkent, established through the conversion of a historical building in Uzbekistan's capital, Tashkent, has met with art enthusiasts.
While new centers stand out on the global contemporary art map, a new contemporary art center named the Centre for Contemporary Arts Tashkent began operations in Uzbekistan's capital, Tashkent, on September 6.
Historical Building Transformed into an Art Center
The historical building, constructed in 1912 and previously used as a tram depot and an electricity generation facility, was redesigned by the French architectural firm Studio KO. Housing exhibition halls and a library, this structure aims to be a permanent institution where art is produced.
Opening Exhibition and International Participation
The center's inaugural exhibition was "Hikmah," curated by Sara Raza and examining traditional knowledge alongside contemporary production. The exhibition hosts works by international artists as well as Uzbek artists.
Bukhara Biennale and Cultural Policies
This opening followed the inaugural Bukhara Biennale held last year, curated by Diana Campbell. While historical madrasas were converted into contemporary art spaces, craft traditions were integrated into the production processes.
Leadership of the Culture Foundation
All these international cultural steps are implemented within the framework of a planned policy spearheaded by the Art and Culture Development Foundation of Uzbekistan. The preservation of historical heritage is addressed hand in hand with the support of contemporary art.
