Özer Kabaş retrospective meets art lovers at Salt Beyoğlu

Salt's new exhibition 'Overseas: Özer Kabaş and His Times', established by Garanti BBVA, has opened to visitors at Salt Beyoğlu to examine Özer Kabaş's place in Turkey's cultural history.

Scope of the Exhibition and Key Concepts

Programmed by Tuğçe Kaplan and Vasıf Kortun, the exhibition addresses concepts such as synthesis, montage, and horizontal and vertical effects developed by Kabaş in his writings.

Focusing on the relationship between local visual culture and the global art scene, the exhibition conveys the artist's educational aspect as well as his paintings to visitors.

Productions of a Versatile Artist

Jewelry designs at the Urart Art Workshop—of which the artist was among the founders—along with his short films and texts are among the important elements featured in the exhibition.

Starting from the 1970s, Kabaş focused on the sea, labor, and human relations in his works, developing a unique form of artistic expression.

Sea and Labor-Focused Works

Rejecting linear perspective in his paintings, the artist preferred to pile images on top of each other and surround them with nature.

In his works featuring marine laborers, he used the sea as a living element surrounding the figures.

Comprehensive Public Program Events

A rich public program consisting of talks, screenings, and panels will meet audiences within the scope of the exhibition.

The first event will take place on Wednesday, September 30, at 18:30 at the Open Cinema in Salt Beyoğlu, with the participation of speaker, poet, and translator Cevat Çapan.

Archive Studies and Visitor Information

Stating that the exhibition is the product of a long-term archive and research process, Tuğçe Kaplan noted that the archive was opened to access in 2022.

Realized following the book Synthesis and Montage: Özer Kabaş Writings, this comprehensive exhibition can be visited until March 14, 2027.
