Spain's Proposal to Skip the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest
RTVE President Jose Pablo Lopez has announced he will submit a proposal for Spain not to participate in next year's Eurovision.
The president of Spain's Radio Television Corporation announced that he will present a proposal to the board of directors for the country not to participate once again in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Bulgaria.
Decision Not to Participate in the Contest
RTVE President Jose Pablo Lopez stated in his address to the Senate that he will submit a proposal to the board of directors for Spain not to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest scheduled to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria, on May 15, 2027.
Suffering of the Palestinian People
Emphasizing that no one can witness the suffering of the Palestinian people without condemning the ongoing humanitarian tragedy, Lopez stated that they have taken a clear stance.
Calls for EBU Reform
Noting that they have led the call for reforms within the European Broadcasting Union alongside other countries over the past year, Lopez demanded stricter governance rules.
Neutrality and Sanction Negotiations
Lopez added that they have been conducting various negotiations regarding sanctions against politically motivated instrumentalization and guarantees for the festival's neutrality.
Netherlands' Boycott Decision
Dutch public broadcaster Avrotros had announced its belief that the contest had lost its neutrality due to the impact of the war in Gaza and tensions in the Middle East.
Protests in Past Years
Countries such as Spain, the Netherlands, Iceland, Ireland, and Slovenia did not participate in the last Eurovision Song Contest in protest of Israel's participation.
