Trabzon Sanatevi Eviction Decision Puts Theatre Groups in a Difficult Situation
The Sanatevi building, which has long hosted art activities in Trabzon, is being asked to be vacated to be transferred to the university.
The Trabzon Sanatevi stage, where theatre groups have been carrying out their work for about twenty years in Trabzon, is being evacuated by a decision of the Governor's Office. The fact that the building will be transferred to Trabzon University Faculty of Fine Arts has led to the narrowing of culture and art spaces in the city.
Eviction Decision and Transfer Process
A decision was made to vacate the Trabzon Sanatevi stage, which is owned by the Trabzon Governor's Office and has long opened its doors to theatre groups. In the letter conveyed to the association management, it was requested that the building be completely vacated by September 23.
It was reported that following the eviction procedures to be carried out, the building in question will be transferred to Trabzon University Faculty of Fine Arts. With this development, artists and theatre communities in the city faced a new spatial crisis.
Culture and Art Spaces are Shrinking
The performance and workspace, which are already limited in Trabzon, decreased even more with this decision. Last year, the Hüseyin Kazaz Cultural Center, which also belonged to the governor's office and was operated by the municipality, was closed down.
As a result of these closure and transfer processes, suitable venues where local theatre groups can rehearse and stage their plays have almost completely disappeared.
Plays Cancelled and Calls Made
Trabzon People's Theatre, operating within the body of Trabzon Halkevi, had to cancel the plays it planned to stage on this stage on September 24.
The art community and theatre groups demanded that this decision be reviewed and that artists be included in the process when decisions regarding the process are made.
