An earthquake centered in Şanlıurfa Karaköprü caused panic in the Southeast, while experts evaluated the fault lines in the region and the effects of the tremor.
According to AFAD data, a shallow earthquake of magnitude 5.4 occurred in the Karaköprü district of Şanlıurfa. While the tremor, which was also felt in surrounding provinces, caused major panic, authorities reported that according to initial assessments, there was no loss of life or severe destruction.

According to data from the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), the 5.4 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in Şanlıurfa's Karaköprü district was recorded at a depth of 7.39 kilometers. The tremor, which was intensely felt in surrounding provinces, drove citizens out into the streets.
Following the earthquake, initial statements made by the Şanlıurfa Governorate officially announced that there had been no loss of life or heavy destruction.

Dr. Ramazan Demirtaş stated that the earthquake occurred approximately 18 kilometers northeast of the Bozova Fault. He reacted against claims in the press regarding a major earthquake.
Opposing claims in the press that the Bozova Fault could produce a magnitude 7 earthquake, the expert stated that the magnitude that should be taken as a basis is 5.4.

Prof. Dr. Naci Görür stated that the tremor was not a surprise and that the February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes changed the geological balance in the region.
Emphasizing that the Southeastern thrust belt and the Arabian Plate continue to accumulate intensive energy, Görür drew attention to the mobility in the region.

Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş stated that after the Maraş earthquakes, the stress load in the southeastern region of Eastern Anatolia has increased.
Bektaş emphasized that the risk status continues on the fault lines in the Bitlis thrust belt and that these regions must be closely monitored.
Expectation of Destruction and Scientific Evaluations
Scientists stated that because the tremor occurred at a shallow depth, it was felt quite strongly on the surface, but explained the general structure of the situation.
Experts stated that no structural destruction is expected in the region except for weak structures, and invited citizens to remain calm.
