336 Thousand Residences Reached with Geothermal Heating Systems
The share of domestic geothermal energy sources in residential heating and the capacity reached by district heating systems have been announced.
As part of efforts to increase the share of domestic resources in energy, Turkey continues to bring its geothermal potential into the economy. Across the country, 19 district heating systems utilizing geothermal sources have reached approximately 336 thousand equivalent residences.
Distribution of Geothermal Sources
There are a total of 19 district heating systems utilizing geothermal sources in Turkey. These systems are predominantly concentrated in the Western Anatolia region.
The current district heating capacity has reached the level of 3,500 MW, enabling hundreds of thousands of households to benefit from subterranean energy.
Direct Use Potential
The fact that 90 percent of the geothermal sources in the country are at low and medium temperatures provides a structure that is extremely suitable for utilizing this energy in direct heating.
While 71 percent of the space heating demand in residences is met by natural gas, the direct use share of geothermal energy stands at 4.2 percent.
Future Targets
New investments are planned to be implemented in order to use the vast energy potential beneath the ground more effectively.
Thanks to these new investments, it is aimed to further expand district heating networks and increase the share of geothermal energy.
