The Process at Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant

All eyes are on Akkuyu, Turkey's first nuclear power plant, regarding when Unit 1 will be commissioned. Following President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's statements that the completion period has entered, the process leading up to the first electricity generation has come to the agenda once again.

Testing Phases and Fuel Loading

After real nuclear fuel is placed into the reactor, electricity will not be fed to the grid immediately. Power will be supplied gradually, the plant's safe operation will be tested at various stages first, and then power will be increased.

Real Fuel and Schedule Scenarios

In June, 163 trial fuel assemblies were placed into the reactor, and a test was conducted on August 6 to see if the systems worked together. There will be a process of approximately three months from the loading of real fuel to the first electricity.

Expectation of Transition to Commercial Operation

If the fuel is loaded at the end of September or beginning of October, it appears possible to generate the first electricity in the final days of 2026. Following the first electricity, with the step-by-step increase of power, the year 2027 stands out as a strong probability for transitioning to commercial operation.
