Average cash earnings across Japan rose by 4.7 percent year-on-year in July 2026, surpassing market expectations and marking the largest increase recorded since January 1997.

July Earnings Increases

Average cash earnings in Japan showed an increase of 4.7 percent year-on-year in the July 2026 period. This rate exceeded market expectations of 3.9 percent, representing the largest increase seen since January 1997.

Developments in Regular and Special Payments

Regular payments, including base salaries, increased by 4.1 percent to reach 301,582 yen. This figure drew attention as the fastest growth recorded since April 1992.

Special payments such as bonuses rose by 6.3 percent to 134,819 yen. In contrast, the increase in overtime pay remained at the 3.1 percent level.

Sectoral Wage Distribution

Wage increases materialized at 13.5 percent in the construction sector, 12.6 percent in mining, and 8.3 percent in transportation and postal services. The information and communication sector recorded growth of 6.2 percent, while the manufacturing sector grew by 4.8 percent.

Contrary to the general picture, the education and learning support field experienced a 2.2 percent decline, making it the only major sector to regress.

Continuity in Real Wages

Real wages in the country showed a 2.4 percent year-on-year increase, maintaining the upward trend for the seventh consecutive month. This recorded rate was noted as the strongest increase seen since May 2021.
