Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced that diesel vehicle owners will receive twenty thousand forints in cash support until December in the face of the global diesel supply shortage and rising fuel prices.

Details of the Support Program

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced that a targeted support package has been prepared for diesel vehicle owners due to rising fuel prices and the global diesel supply shortage.

According to the statement, the government chose direct financial assistance rather than implementing price caps on the grounds that caps could trigger supply shortages.

Payment Amount and Conditions

It was stated that the government will provide direct support to one million diesel vehicle owners and their families, paying a total of twenty thousand forints to owners of vehicles with a maximum of 150 horsepower until December.

In addition to this aid, it was stated that additional support will be provided to farmers through special consumption tax refunds.

Contraction in Global Diesel Markets

It was noted that an unprecedented diesel shortage is being experienced across Europe, and supply conditions in global markets have tightened significantly in recent weeks.

Supply tightness is projected to continue due to limited spare refinery capacity, Russia's export ban, and winter heating demand.

International Factors Affecting Supply

It was reported that Russia has extended its export ban until September 30, while shipments in the Middle East have been disrupted due to tensions originating from Iran and restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Additionally, it was stated that Hungary's energy company MOL operating at a lower capacity following the fire at its main refinery in October 2025 has increased the pressure in the country.
