Consumer Confidence Index in Germany Rises in September
Contrary to analysts' expectations, consumer confidence increased, reaching a six-month high driven by a recovery in income and economic expectations.
The September Consumer Confidence Index, prepared jointly by the German market research firm GfK and the Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions, beat market expectations to rise to minus 26.6 points, reaching its highest level in six months.
Unexpected Rise in the Index
The results of the Consumer Confidence Index for the coming month, prepared by German market research company GfK and the Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions, have been shared with the public.
According to the released data, the projected index value for September showed an increase of 2.8 points compared to the previous month, reaching minus 26.6 points.
Strong Rise in Income Expectations
Despite a slight decrease in the propensity to save, a strong increase in consumers' income expectations played a decisive role in this noticeable rise in consumer confidence.
The income expectations index increased by 16.2 points to reach 1.7, seeing its highest level in the last 6 months.
Economic Expectations Give Positive Signals
Consumers' expectations regarding the country's economy continued to give positive signals and maintain their upward movement.
The economic expectations index increased by 2.4 points to minus 3.9 points, recording an increase for the fourth consecutive month.
Large-Scale Purchases Remained Weak
Despite the increase in income expectations, German consumers' willingness to make large-scale purchases, such as automobiles or furniture, continued to remain quite weak.
The propensity to buy index remained almost unchanged on a monthly basis, following a steady course at minus 9.8 points.
Expert Assessments and Propensity to Save
Analysts state that due to geopolitical crises and high inflation concerns, consumers are turning to savings instead of spending their money.
Although the propensity to save index declined slightly by 1.5 points this month to 15.5, it continued to maintain its high level.
