Electric and hybrid vehicle sales on the rise in the European market

Rising fuel prices and incentives in Europe have multiplied electric vehicle sales; Chinese brands increased their share while German manufacturers declined.

With the increase in fuel prices and higher incentives in European Union countries, sales of electric and hybrid cars have increased significantly. While Chinese manufacturers' market share grew, German brands experienced a decline.

Electric and Hybrid Sales in Europe

According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, fully electric car registrations increased by 62.7 percent compared to the same period last year. The share of these vehicles in all new car sales in the EU rose to 27.7 percent.

While plug-in hybrid registrations increased by 11 percent compared to August of last year, hybrid electric registrations also recorded growth. Hybrid sales accounted for approximately one-third of new car registrations in August.

Chinese Manufacturers' Market Share is Growing

A noticeable increase was observed in the share of automotive groups from China and with Chinese ownership in the EU market. Driven by the impact of incentives provided for vehicles coming from China, sales of these groups increased by approximately 71 percent on an annual basis.

While Leapmotor, Chery, BYD, and the Geely Group were among the fastest-growing manufacturers, the combined sales of German brands recorded a 1.1 percent decline.

Situation in the Turkish Automotive Market

In Turkey, during the January-August period, hybrid car sales reached a 33.1 percent share, while electric car sales achieved an 18.8 percent share. Hybrid sales showed an increase compared to last year.

Tofaş and Production Activities

Following the end of Egea production at Tofaş, Ram exports and the production of new versions of medium-sized commercial vehicles increased working hours. Citroen and Opel executives visited the factory to evaluate cooperation and new projects.

New Concepts and Models

Renault introduced its electric concept inspired by the Renault 8 Gordini. Nissan announced the Pixo, a fully electric mini model with a range of 259 km to be produced in Slovenia.

Chery Battery Safety Test

Chery subjected the high-voltage battery of its Tiggo 9 CSH model to a 24-hour immersion in seawater in Constanta, Romania, as well as underbody impact tests. As a result of the tests, it was confirmed that there was no structural damage to the battery.
