The reduction of the annual consumption limit applied in the final source supply tariff—which dictates that those who consume more electricity pay more—from 4,000 kilowatt-hours to 3,000 kilowatt-hours has come to the agenda once again. Experts state that this situation will cause households to face higher prices without an official hike being made to the national tariff.

Expectation of a Decrease in the Consumption Limit

The reduction of the annual consumption limit applied in the final source supply tariff, which stipulates that high consumers pay more, down to 3,000 kilowatt-hours has come to the agenda.

With the reduction of this limit, which is currently applied as 4,000 kilowatt-hours, more households are expected to use electricity at the higher tariff.

Indirect Price Hike Warning from Experts

Mahir Ulutaş, Chairman of the Chamber of Electrical Engineers, emphasized that the lowering of high consumption limits should be taken into account in price hike debates.

Ulutaş stated that consumers are faced with higher prices by pulling the limits downward without making an official increase to the national tariff.

Household Consumption Averages

It is stated that the average monthly electricity consumption of a four-person household is around 230 kilowatt-hours.

While this consumption corresponds to approximately 2,760 kilowatt-hours on an annual basis, it is stated that households are coming quite close to the current 3,000 kilowatt-hour threshold.

Social Assistance Need and Data

It is stated that low-income citizens have difficulty paying even their current bills and that this situation is reflected in official data.

According to data from the Ministry of Family and Social Services, 1.8 million households needed social assistance in the first half of 2026 in order to pay their electricity bills.

Historical Increases in Bills

Following the 25 percent electricity tariff increase made by EPDK in January, the minimum electricity bill of a four-person family increased.

With the hike made as of March, the increase in the bill over the last 5 years reached 306 percent, while the increase in the distribution fee reached 880 percent.
