Energy Minister Bayraktar Makes Statement on SMRs and Nuclear Energy
Minister Alparslan Bayraktar shared the country's energy projects, SMR targets, and mining strategies in his evaluations at the Turkey Investment Conference.
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced during the 19th Turkey Investment Conference that he hopes to see the first small modular reactor commissioned in Turkey in the first half of the 2030s.
SMR and Nuclear Targets
Minister Alparslan Bayraktar stated that Turkey Nuclear Energy Inc. has signed a cooperation agreement with the U.S. Trade and Development Agency in the field of small modular reactors. He stated that this agreement will also cover Central Asia and the Turkic Republics.
International Collaborations
Conveying that cooperation opportunities regarding nuclear energy are being evaluated with Canada and the French company EDF, Bayraktar emphasized that the sharing of experience in terms of operations and safety is also of great importance.
TRNC Energy Projects
Stating that offshore work has begun to supply gas to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Minister Bayraktar noted that the infrastructure will also enable the transport of gas in the Eastern Mediterranean to Turkey in the future.
Electrification in Transportation
Drawing attention to the increase in demand for petroleum products, Bayraktar announced that by 2035, there will be a need for 13 million electric vehicles and at least 1.3 million charging stations.
Mining and Energy Transition
Expressing that critical minerals are indispensable for the energy transition, Bayraktar stated that Eti Maden will pursue a more aggressive growth strategy in the field of strategic minerals.
