Europe Drives Growth in Global Electric Vehicle Market in August
According to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence data, global electric vehicle sales increased in August, with Europe at the center of this growth.
Global electric vehicle demand continued to rise in August, with the European market acting as the main driver of growth. Strong sales figures in the region managed to offset declines in the Chinese and North American markets.
Global Sales Data
Global electric vehicle demand recorded an increase for the sixth consecutive month in August. According to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence data, worldwide sales rose by 2 percent year-on-year to reach 1.83 million units.
Total global electric vehicle sales in the first eight months of the year reached 13.4 million units. Market dynamics between battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles continue to show differences.
Growth in the European Market
While strong sales in Europe offset declines in China and North America, monthly sales in August surged by 36 percent to 380,000 units.
Since the beginning of the year, sales growth in the region has reached 29 percent. Subsidies and supportive policies in major markets played a decisive role in keeping demand strong.
Downward Trend in China and North America
Electric vehicle sales in China declined by 11 percent in August to 1.03 million units. This drop was influenced by the base effect created by high sales during the same period last year.
In the North American market, sales fell by 33 percent to 140,000 units. The downturn experienced in the US following the removal of federal electric vehicle tax incentives in September 2025 played a role in this result.
Rest of the World and Export Moves
In the rest of the world, electric vehicle sales surged by a massive 97 percent in August, rising to 290,000 units.
Chinese automotive manufacturers, in line with changes in the domestic market, are increasingly turning to international exports to sustain their growth.
