The harvest of the geographically indicated walnuts, described as white gold in the Niksar district, started with enthusiasm and the participation of producers. Following the frost events last year, high yields and quality this season have brought a smile to the producers' faces.

Harvest Process and Operations

Producers in the Niksar district came together in the orchards and started an intensive working pace for the walnut harvest. Trees are shaken using the vibration method with special machines attached to tractors, and the products falling to the ground are collected rapidly.

Hulling and Drying

The harvested walnuts are first carefully separated from their green husks in machines. Afterwards, the products spread out in suitable areas receiving sunlight are made ready for sale after being completely dried and sorted.

Producer Statements and Yield

Halis Yılmaz, a producer in the district, stated that this year is quite productive compared to last year and the quality is very good. A yield of approximately 2,000 tons is expected to be obtained in Niksar and its surroundings this season.

Geographical Indication and Varieties

Reminding that the Niksar walnut received a geographical indication in 2010, Halis Yılmaz stated that production processes are carried out in accordance with these rules. Walnut varieties such as Chandler, Fernor, and Niksar 1 are grown in the orchards.

Sales and Price Expectations

The harvested products are sent to all corners of the country, primarily Antalya, Muğla, Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Kayseri, Samsun, Trabzon, Gaziantep, and Kırşehir. This year, walnut prices are projected to range between 200 and 250 liras.
