Global Debt Rankings Announced According to Bank for International Settlements Data
Current data covering the public, household, and corporate debts of 43 countries has been published. While Luxembourg has the highest indebtedness rate, Turkey ranked at the very bottom of the list.
The debt ranking of 43 economies prepared by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) based on the data from the last quarter of 2025 has revealed the financial obligations of countries. In the study where total debt is proportioned to the gross domestic product, Turkey ranked 43rd on the list with a total debt ratio of 72.9%, becoming the economy with the lowest indebtedness rate.
Luxembourg is at the Top
Luxembourg ranks first among 43 countries with a total debt ratio of 446.4%. It is noteworthy that non-financial corporate debt in the country's debt structure is at a very high level of 358.8%.
Turkey's Debt Structure
Turkey ranks at the bottom of the list with a total debt-to-GDP ratio of 72.9%. When the distribution of this ratio is examined, it is seen that 23.9% consists of public debt, 10.1% of household debt, and 38.9% of non-financial corporate debt.
Situation in Other Countries
Japan is at the top in public debt with 194.5%, and Switzerland in household debt with 123% in their respective categories. China ranks 8th with 300.1%, and the USA ranks 14th with 256.7%.
