The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations announced that global food prices reached their highest peak in the last four years in September, as logistical disruptions and adverse weather conditions heightened supply concerns.

Warning for Producers and Consumers from Chief Economist

FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero stated that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the Black Sea, combined with climate shocks, are putting pressure on energy and basic food commodities.

Increase in Grain and Wheat Prices

Logistical constraints in the Black Sea region and dry weather in North America played a role in a 6.3 percent increase in wheat prices. Global corn prices also rose due to developments in the US and Brazil.

Sugar and Other Commodity Groups

The FAO Sugar Price Index increased by 6.1 percent in September. Expectations of a contraction in global supply, low production forecasts in Thailand, and weak monsoon rains in India drove this increase.

Cereal Production Forecast and Expectations
