Harvest and initial export shipments have started for the Hicaz pomegranate, cultivated on approximately 3,700 decares in İzmir's Selçuk district and noted for its resistance to saline soils.

Harvest and Export Process

As the harvest excitement begins for the Hicaz pomegranate grown on approximately 3,700 decares in İzmir's Selçuk district, the first export products of the year have been prepared to be dispatched.

Production Share and Added Value

Production in the Selçuk region single-handedly accounts for 45 percent of İzmir's total pomegranate production, providing high added value to producers.

Resistance to Saline Soils

Despite the increasing soil salinity in the region, the high resistance shown by the Hicaz pomegranate to these conditions has created an important alternative source of income for farmers.

Past Markets

Last year, pomegranate exports were carried out to a total of 8 different countries, led by Germany and Austria, achieving significant success in foreign markets.

Early Harvest and Quality Emphasis

It was stated that the harvest took place even earlier than in the Adana, Antalya, and Mersin regions, making Selçuk the origin of the first exports, and that the fruit is receiving intense demand due to its color.
