The expectations index prepared by the ZEW Institute in Germany reached 34.7 in August with a slight increase. While an improvement exceeding expectations was also observed in the current conditions indicator, experts state that energy prices and geopolitical risks continue to exert pressure on the economy.
Expectations Index and Current Conditions
The expectations index announced by the ZEW Institute rose from 34.2 in the previous month to 34.7. While the median forecast in the Bloomberg survey was 40, the indicator reflecting current conditions recorded an improvement above expectations at -47.1.
Economic Recovery and Expert Opinions
ZEW President Achim Wambach stated that experts display cautious optimism regarding the recovery of the economy. He conveyed that growth continues to be supported by fiscal measures and is further strengthened by export momentum.
Risks and Uncertainty Factors
Among the risks threatening growth are high energy prices caused by the war in Iran and additional uncertainties created by hybrid attacks. These elements continue to constitute a negative burden on the economy.
Growth Expectations and Negative Factors
Although strong growth in the first half of the year raised hopes of escaping stagnation, low water levels in the Rhine River are disrupting commercial shipping. Additionally, in July, industrial production experienced its largest drop in nearly a year, and exports also recorded a surprise decline.
