Benchmark futures natural gas prices across Europe increased by 6.8% to reach 80.98 euros, hitting their highest level since January 2023.
Price Increases and Levels
Benchmark futures prices reached 80.98 euros with a 6.8% increase, marking the highest level seen since January 2023. Although prices remain far from their peaks during the energy crisis, they have more than doubled since the outbreak of the war in the Middle East.
Storage Challenges Ahead of Winter
Ongoing disruptions in exports have tightened the global market, and Europe is facing major difficulties in rebuilding its gas reserves ahead of the winter season. With demand expected to increase during the winter months, there is a risk that price pressures could turn into a broader economic problem.
Occupancy Rate of Storage Facilities
The occupancy rate of storage facilities in Europe remains at only 67%, significantly lagging behind the five-year average of 84%. As the heating season begins, traders are expected to enter into intense competition with buyers in Asia and other regions.
Energy Situation in Germany
In Germany, Europe's largest energy market, the occupancy rate of storage facilities stands at 55%. The German Ministry of Economic Affairs stated that four storage facilities in the country are almost empty and that it is technically impossible to achieve the occupancy targets.
Ministry and Expert Assessments
The German Ministry of Economic Affairs stated that about a quarter of the facilities have exceeded their targets and that there is no reason to believe a supply crisis is imminent. Anne-Sophie Corbeau, a researcher at Columbia University, noted that price pressure is unlikely to disappear, but there are no signs of physical scarcity.
