With comprehensive changes made to the Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Drinking Milk, the added sugar ratio in UHT and pasteurized milk has been capped at a maximum of 4 percent by mass, artificial flavors have been banned, and fat ratios have been reclassified.

4 Percent Limit on Added Sugar

With the new regulation, an upper limit has been introduced to the amount of added sugar contained in boxed milk. While labeling was previously sufficient, in the new period, the proportion of added sugar used in drinking milk will be a maximum of 4 percent by mass.

Ban on Artificial Flavors

The taste and odor components of products on the market have also been placed under strict control. According to the new rules, only natural flavorings will be permitted for use in drinking milk, and non-natural artificial flavors will be completely banned.

Minimum Ratio Requirement in Flavored Milks

In fruit-flavored, cocoa, and chocolate milks, the quantity of the components giving the product its name has been mandated to be at least 1 percent. Real fruit or other flavoring elements cannot remain below this specified minimum ratio.

New Classification for Fat Ratios

The classification regarding the fat ratios of plain milks has also been completely renewed. In whole milk, the fat content has been set at a minimum of 3.5 grams per 100 milliliters, while intermediate categories have been eliminated and new standard classes have been established.
