Economic Pursuits and Application Process
Pakistan submitted an official application to join the BRICS coalition in 2023 with the aim of easing its economic difficulties and diversifying its financing options.
While the country's GDP growth rate stood at 3.70 percent according to the Pakistan Economic Survey, Pakistan received a share from the New Development Bank according to a Nikkei Asia report.
India's Stance and Consensus Rule
Although the coalition consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa expanded by welcoming new members last year, Pakistan's membership has not yet been accepted.
Despite the support of Russia and China, India's opposition acts as an obstacle to Pakistan's membership in the bloc, which requires unanimity for membership decisions.
Pakistan's Diplomatic Contacts
Pakistan Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch confirmed that her country wants to join BRICS to advance international cooperation and has made an official request.
Pakistan's Ambassador to Russia, Muhammad Khalid Jamali, stated that his country is in contact with member states for membership and is seeking support particularly from Russia.
