Statement from Iran on the Strait of Hormuz: Conditions Must Be Met
Iran emphasized that its conditions must be met for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened, stating that the crisis can only be resolved through diplomacy.
Following U.S. President Donald Trump's remarks rejecting a peace proposal, Iran announced that its own conditions must be met for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened. The Tehran administration stated that the crisis with the U.S. and Israel can only be resolved through diplomacy.
Emphasis on Diplomacy and Conditions
In a statement on his social media account, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that their conditions are clear. Araghchi expressed that any step toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz depends on these conditions being met and that the deadlock can only be exited through negotiation.
Peace Proposal and Trump's Response
Iran had submitted a peace proposal last week at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. U.S. President Donald Trump, however, announced on Saturday that he rejected this plan, arguing that Iran's efforts to reach an agreement on opening the waterway stem from desperation.
Official Notification Awaited from Mediators
Araghchi said that they had not received an official notification from the parties mediating between Tehran and Washington stating that the U.S. officially rejected the proposal. He noted that they are waiting for the mediators to convey their final views and will make their decisions accordingly.
Regional Tension and Trade Threat
Iranian Army Commander-in-Chief Amir Hatami emphasized that they will not accept Iran being unable to conduct trade while foreign forces use the strategic waterways in the region. Hatami stated that if Iran cannot trade and live, no one else will be able to trade and live either.
