Total amount of card payments exceeded 2 trillion 990 billion liras in August

According to Interbank Card Center data for August, the total spending amount made with credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards in Turkey reached 2 trillion 990.4 billion liras, showing a 39 percent increase compared to the same period of the previous year.

Card Numbers and Distribution

As of August, the number of credit cards across Turkey was recorded at 153.4 million, debit cards at 224.5 million, and prepaid cards at 100.1 million.

Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of credit cards increased by 11 percent and debit cards by 4 percent, while the number of prepaid cards declined by 5 percent, bringing the total number of cards to 487 million.

Spending Amounts by Payment Types

The total amount of payments made with cards in August reached the level of 2 trillion 990.4 billion liras with a 39 percent increase on an annual basis.

Of this spending amount, 2 trillion 537 billion liras was made with credit cards, 445.9 billion liras with debit cards, and 7.5 billion liras with prepaid cards.

Developments in Card Payments via Internet

The total amount of card payments made over the internet in August rose to 923.9 billion liras with an annual increase of 41 percent.

While the share of card payments made via the internet within total spending stood at 30 percent, the number of payments in this area reached 255.8 million.

Contactless Payment Habits

The number of contactless payments made with cards in August increased by 9 percent, reaching 1 billion 335.7 million.

The contactless payment amount rose by 42 percent in the same period to 1 trillion 39.9 billion liras, and 4 out of every 5 in-store payments were made contactless.
