Trump doesn’t rule out declaring state of emergency before midterm elections

In a comprehensive interview with Time magazine, US President Donald Trump rejected criticism regarding the war with Iran, dismissed low poll ratings as 'fake,' and did not rule out the possibility of declaring a state of emergency before the midterm elections.

Iran War and Economic Impacts

In his interview with Time magazine, US President Donald Trump rejected responsibility for misleading the American public regarding the duration of the Iran war and blamed the media for portraying his statements that way. Predicting in March that the conflict would last four to five weeks, Trump later stated that the process had been extended, and that he extended it because he wanted to push the conflict further. The war with Iran, which has lasted for over seven months, has caused economic hardships for the public, with costs such as gasoline prices exceeding four dollars per gallon and inflation at the 3.4 percent level.

Low Poll Ratings and Reactions

According to polls conducted by the AP and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, only 26 percent of adults approve of the handling of the economy, while the overall approval rating for the presidency remained at 31 percent. While 74 percent of participants stated that the economy is heading in the wrong direction, 65 percent directly blamed Trump's policies for the rising costs. In his interview with Time magazine, Trump rejected these low approval ratings, arguing that the polls are fake and the pollsters are corrupt.

Midterm Elections and State of Emergency Possibility

While it is stated that citizens' economic dissatisfaction could affect Republican candidates in the November midterm elections, Trump did not rule out the possibility of declaring a state of emergency prior to the elections. Stating in the interview that he does not completely rule anything out on this matter and that they will see, Trump indicated that he could use the 19th-century Insurrection Act, which allows military troops to be deployed domestically when necessary. Within the scope of election security debates, administration officials have also left open the possibility that federal law enforcement officers could be dispatched to polling stations.
