US Demands EU Release Diesel Reserves
Aimed at lowering fuel prices, the US administration has requested that European Union countries release one-third of their strategic diesel reserves into the market.
The US administration has presented a new proposal to European Union countries aimed at driving down rising global fuel prices. Washington has asked the EU to release a significant portion of the diesel in its national strategic reserves into the market within 180 days.
Call for Coordination on Strategic Reserves
The proposal, presented by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, envisions EU countries coordinating to release diesel from their national strategic reserves into the market. This move aims to balance rising fuel prices.
Demand for 120 Million Barrels of Diesel Within 180 Days
Under the request, EU countries are expected to supply a total of 120 million barrels of diesel to the market over a 180-day period. This amount corresponds to more than one-third of the bloc's total diesel reserves of approximately 315 million barrels.
Countries with the Highest Reserves
Among the countries holding the highest diesel reserves within the European Union, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Poland stand out. The steps to be taken by these countries are expected to play a critical role in the success of the process.
Export Restriction Alternative and IEA Agenda
US President Donald Trump had previously brought up the possibility of imposing restrictions on diesel exports. Meanwhile, the issue is also expected to be addressed at the upcoming meeting of the International Energy Agency Governing Board.
