US foreign trade deficit exceeds expectations in August

According to data released by the US Department of Commerce for August, the country's foreign trade deficit increased by 13.7 percent on a monthly basis to 105.6 billion dollars.

The US Department of Commerce shared the foreign trade data for August with the public. Accordingly, the country's foreign trade deficit recorded an increase of 13.7 percent on a monthly basis in August.
Highest Level Since March 2025
With the realized increase, the foreign trade deficit reached 105.6 billion dollars and saw its highest level since March 2025. Market expectations were for the deficit to be 100.8 billion dollars.
Change in Export and Import Figures
The country's exports increased by 1.4 percent in August compared to the previous month, reaching 315.2 billion dollars. US imports showed a 4.3 percent increase, reaching a record level of 420.8 billion dollars.
Foreign Trade Deficits by Country
While the deficit the US ran with Canada rose to 7.1 billion dollars in August, the deficit with Ireland dropped to 2.5 billion dollars. Mexico, China, and the European Union were also among the partners with which a deficit was recorded.
Partners with Foreign Trade Surplus
During this period, countries such as the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia were among the main trading partners with which the US gave a foreign trade surplus.
