Despite declining in August, the ISM manufacturing index in the United States managed to remain at its second-highest level since 2022.
Although the ISM manufacturing index in the US fell by one point to 54.6 in August, it maintained its course near a four-year high, indicating continued vitality in the sector.
Current Status of the Manufacturing Index
The US ISM manufacturing index recorded a decline of one point in August, falling to 54.6.
This data retained its status as the second-highest value recorded since 2022, ensuring that figures above 50 in the sector indicated growth.
Production and Demand Data
The production index posted the second-best value reached since late 2021.
While new orders data continued to point to growth, it came in at its lowest level since March.
Employment and Sectoral Distribution
Factory employment continued its upward trend for the second consecutive month, albeit at a slower pace.
A total of fifteen manufacturing industries recorded growth in August, while contractions were experienced in the wood and chemical products sectors.
Factors Supporting the Sector
The manufacturing sector gained momentum within the year 2026, reversing a long-standing period of stagnation.
During this process, factories benefited positively from resilient consumer demand, strong commercial investments, and public spending in the defense sector.
Costs and Supply Chain
The sector has had to overcome various challenges such as war-induced energy price increases and supply chain disruptions.
In August, factories once again faced problems with high raw material prices and extended supplier delivery times.
