New Sanctions Against Russia and Iran
US President Donald Trump signed a sweeping sanctions bill on Friday targeting the Russian economy and energy buyers. Passed by the House of Representatives, the bill grants Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on the top five buyers of Russian oil and gas.
China and India Among Targeted Countries
The new regulations primarily affect major energy buyers such as China and India. According to CREA data, China accounted for 50 percent of Russian crude oil exports between December 2022 and August 2026, followed by India with 37 percent.
Exceptions and Scope Included in the Bill
The law provides certain exemptions for countries that import less than 15 percent of their natural gas from Russia and are working to reduce this dependence. The bill also targets Vladimir Putin, senior Russian government officials, banks, and Russia's shadow tanker fleet.
Message of Appreciation from Ukraine
Named after a former senator and officially titled the Lindsey O. Graham Russia and Iran Sanctions Act, the text was expanded at Trump's request to also cover Iran's energy and arms sectors. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Trump for signing the bill.
