Wall Street mostly lost value on Wednesday under pressure from the bond market driven by a strong US economy, as the S&P 500 and Dow Jones indexes fell while oil prices rose.

General Downtrend in Stock Markets

Wall Street experienced a general decline on Wednesday due to the negative repercussions of the US economy continuing to hold strong in the face of challenges.

The S&P 500 index slipped 0.3%, closing out its third losing month in the last four months, falling 19.30 points to 7,651.54.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 443.87 points, or 0.9%, to 50,906.05, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 63.52 points to 26,861.06.

Economic Data and the Bond Market

Recent data released showed that the US economy was even stronger in the spring than previously thought.

This situation caused bond market yields to remain high and the pressure on stock markets to continue.

Early in the day, a report showing that the cost of living for consumers in August increased by 3.4% compared to the previous year had created optimism in the markets.

Changes in Bond Yields

Short-term Treasury yields fell as investors priced in a 37% probability that the Federal Reserve would raise its main interest rate next month.

Conversely, long-term yields climbed in the bond market.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose from 5.26% to 5.29%, while the yield on the 30-year bond increased from 5.59% to 5.64%.

Oil Market and Global Developments

Uncertainties regarding when the war with Iran will completely free up the flow of crude oil pushed oil prices higher.

The price of a barrel of Brent crude oil increased by 1.9% to trade at $98.03.

In corporate news, Cal-Maine Foods shares fell 0.7%, while Hewlett Packard Enterprise gained 3.9% and MongoDB gained 3.4%.
