Volkswagen is Transferring its Osnabrueck Plant to the Defense Industry
Automotive giant Volkswagen is selling its Osnabrueck factory to convert it into military production amid competition with Chinese rivals.
Facing competition from Chinese rivals and undergoing a restructuring process, Volkswagen has reached an agreement to transfer the Osnabrueck facility to Israeli firm Aurelius Capital and the Lower Saxony state government in order to shift it to military production.
Sales Process of the Osnabrueck Facility
Volkswagen is selling the Osnabrueck facility, where vehicle production will end in the summer of 2027, to Israeli firm Aurelius Capital and the Lower Saxony state government.
Protection of Employment
Employee representatives and union officials announced that thanks to this transfer move, the employment of approximately 1,400 out of 1,800 people at the facility can be preserved.
Production of Air Defense Systems
According to the preliminary agreement, the first anchor project to be carried out at the facility will be executed in cooperation with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, producing air defense system components for Germany and Europe.
Strategic Transformation and Market Conditions
Faced with the risk of transforming its factories in Germany due to weak demand, high costs, and Chinese competition, Volkswagen is capitalizing on increasing defense expenditures across Europe.
