Volkswagen announced that it has decided to unilaterally terminate collective bargaining agreements covering employees in Germany as of the end of the year, due to deepening economic difficulties and market pressure from Chinese manufacturers.

Termination of Collective Bargaining Agreements

In an official statement by the company, citing current economic challenges, it was announced that various collective bargaining agreements will be terminated as of December 31.

Rights and Plants Covered

It was stated that the termination decision also covers the umbrella agreement regulating rights such as working hours and holiday pay for approximately 100,000 workers employed at the company's main plants in Germany.

Restructuring Move

Within the scope of the radical restructuring process managed under CEO Oliver Blume, some plants that were previously guaranteed have once again faced the risk of closure.

Emphasis on Competition and Cost

Human Resources Board Member Arne Meiswinkel drew attention to the competition from Chinese manufacturers in Europe and emphasized that it is critical for the company to bring its costs to a competitive level.

Union Reaction and Signal of Struggle

IG Metall union representative Thorsten Groeger reacted harshly to the decision, stating that the strike ban will end as of January 1 and that a fierce struggle will begin.

Future Negotiations

The parties are planned to reconvene in the second half of October to discuss new working conditions.
