Greece Deploys Commando Company to Border in Evros Region
Greece has increased its military presence in the Evros region along the Turkish border by stationing a new commando company at the Palaskas Barracks.
As part of steps to strengthen its military presence in the Evros region along its land border with Turkey, Greece has deployed a commando company to the Palaskas Barracks in Megalo Derio, under the municipality of Soufli.
New Deployment at Palaskas Barracks
It was decided to deploy a Greek army commando company to the Palaskas Barracks in Megalo Derio, under the municipality of Soufli, and the new military unit will operate in the mountainous and forested sector of Evros.
Before the unit settled in, renovation and improvement works were carried out on the buildings and other military facilities at the Palaskas Barracks, positioning the commandos in the village of Megalo Derio.
Structure and Strategic Importance of the Region
Evros News reported that the unit deployed to the region is at the commando company level and that elements from the 388th unit in Sapes, Rhodope province, are already serving at the facility.
Greek defense publications drew attention to the significance of the deployment in Megalo Derio near the Evros river in Western Thrace, emphasizing the rugged terrain structure and proximity to the Turkish border.
Military Sources and Organization
While it has not yet been disclosed which unit the commando company was sent from, the Greek press suggests the possibility that it may have been formed from Special Forces units in Neo Santa or commando units in Drama.
The Greek Ministry of Defense had announced in July 2026 that under Agenda 2030, three new Special Operations Units would be established in Attica, Central Macedonia, and northern Evros.

While the Greek local press associated the new military presence with human smuggling activities and security issues in the region, it is assessed that this step will provide the capability for a faster military response.
