Magnitude 5.4 Earthquake in Sanliurfa's Karakopru Felt in Surrounding Provinces
Following the Sanliurfa-centered tremor, experts evaluated the causes of the perceived increase in the number of earthquakes and their relationship to major earthquakes.
While a magnitude 5.4 earthquake recorded at 10:40 AM in Sanliurfa's Karakopru district was felt over a wide area in the Southeastern Anatolia Region, experts made statements regarding claims of an increase and the nature of the tremors.
Details of the Sanliurfa-Centered Tremor
According to the statement made by AFAD, an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 occurred at a depth of 7.39 kilometers in the Karakopru district of Sanliurfa.
Effects Felt in Surrounding Provinces and the Region
The earthquake was also felt in the cities of Diyarbakir, Mardin, Siirt, Sirnak, Batman, Gaziantep, Adiyaman, and Malatya.
The Sanliurfa Governorship announced that approximately 40 people applied to health institutions due to panic, and damage assessment efforts are ongoing throughout the city.
Suspension of Education and Measures Taken
Following the earthquake, education was suspended for one day in educational institutions, nurseries, and daycare centers as a precaution.
Perception of Increase in Earthquake Numbers and Scientific Approach
Experts state that a scientific increase cannot be spoken of by looking only at a few days' earthquake list, and that periodic comparisons must be made for this.
While developing measurement systems allow smaller earthquakes to be recorded more quickly, this leads to news becoming more visible.
Different Fault Systems and Independent Tremors
The General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration's Active Fault Map of Turkey shows that there are numerous active faults in the country and that independent tremors can occur in different systems.
Expectation of a Major Earthquake and Official Warnings
Stating that not every earthquake is a harbinger of a larger tremor, officials emphasized that damaged structures should be avoided and official statements should be followed.
