During President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to the Türkevi in New York, a new grant and technical study agreement in the field of nuclear energy was signed between Turkey and the US. At the ceremony attended by Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, the feasibility of small modular reactors and fourth-generation reactor technologies in Turkey will be addressed.

Signing Ceremony Held in New York

A project-based grant agreement was signed between Turkey Nuclear Energy Inc. and the US Trade and Development Agency at the Türkevi in New York.

Authorized figures signed the agreement, which was realized with the participation of Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar.

Officials Who Signed

The project-based grant and technical study agreement was signed by Dr. Necati Yamac, General Manager of Turkey Nuclear Energy Inc.

On the US side, the agreement was signed by Thomas R. Hardy, Deputy Director of the US Trade and Development Agency.

Scope of the Technical Study

Within the framework of the agreement, the small modular reactor designs of 4 different American companies will be thoroughly discussed.

In addition, 5 different fourth-generation reactor designs will be evaluated in detail in terms of technical, economic, regulatory, and licensing aspects.

Budget and Duration Details

It was officially announced that the budget for this technical study in the field of nuclear energy is approximately 2 million dollars.

The financing of the study in question will be entirely covered by the US Trade and Development Agency and will last for at least one year.

Criteria to be Examined

Within the scope of the technical studies to be carried out, the design features, costs, and licensing statuses of the reactors will be examined.

Topics such as supply chains, SWOT analyses, financing models, design safety, and site selection will be addressed.

Minister Bayraktar's Evaluations

Minister Alparslan Bayraktar stated that they will comprehensively evaluate the applicability of new generation nuclear technologies.

It was stated that Turkey is determined to diversify its energy basket and study alternatives alongside large-scale power plants.

Feasibility and Evaluation Process

It was emphasized that the current process does not mean that a reactor has been purchased from any company or that a definitive construction decision has been made.

The foundations of the cooperation were previously laid with the Strategic Civil Nuclear Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding signed at the White House.
