Allegation of Neglect in the Treatment of a Child with Special Needs

14-year-old I.I., a patient with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome who was taken to a hospital in Bağcılar, Istanbul, due to suspected hip dislocation, was admitted to the intensive care unit after suffering severe tissue tears and vascular injuries as a result of disproportionate and forceful interventions by doctors.
Hospital Admission Process
14-year-old special needs child I.I. was taken to the emergency department of a hospital in Bağcılar by her family on the night of August 2 due to pain caused by a fall at home.
Syndrome Information Provided
The family verbally and in writing informed the hospital staff and physicians that the child had Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, noted the fragility of her musculoskeletal structure, and mentioned the platinum implant in her leg.
Forceful Interventions
Disregarding the patient's sensitivity, the orthopedics team attempted to set the hip in place for approximately 4 hours using harsh pulling and forcing methods with multiple personnel.
Damage Disclosed During Surgery
After the attempts failed, the young girl was taken into surgery, where it was reported that her muscle and soft tissues were torn away from the bone, she suffered internal bleeding, and the tissues had to be re-stitched.
Intensive Care Process
Her condition worsened following the operation, and the young girl was intubated and transferred to the intensive care unit; it was determined that her wrist was also dislocated even after she was moved to the ward.
Legal Process Initiated
Father Bayram I. and mother Elif I. applied to the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and CİMER with allegations of severe negligence, requesting an investigation into those responsible.
