A new scientific study conducted in Japan revealed that merely inhaling the scent of freshly brewed coffee, even without a single drop of caffeine entering the body yet, alleviates negative emotions within minutes.
In the study by scientists from Showa University of Pharmacy, the brain activity, heart rhythm, and psychological states of volunteers aged 20 to 29 were monitored while they were exposed to the ambient coffee aroma without actually drinking coffee.
Impact on Mood
In the analyses, a significant drop was detected in the participants' anxiety, fatigue, confusion, and low morale scores after spending five minutes in the presence of fresh coffee aroma.
The researchers determined that rather than creating a sudden burst of energy in the person, the aroma rapidly pulls down accumulated negative moods and stress levels.
Physiological and Mental Findings
Measurements taken with portable devices determined that the coffee aroma elevated the relaxation index in brain waves; however, it did not create a significant difference in the participants' heart rate or pulse variability.
Experts emphasized that this picture may stem from the strong connection that the sense of smell establishes with memory and emotion centers, rather than a physical caffeine stimulation. It was noted that coffee aroma provides psychological relaxation by triggering positive associations in the mind, such as resting, morning routines, and a sense of taking a break.
