The rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached 60 health zones. The Ministry of Health announced that 5,794 confirmed cases have been detected in the country and 2,786 people have lost their lives.

Official authorities reported that the rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached 60 health zones. The number of affected areas increased as cases were also detected in the Biena and Manguredjipa regions of North Kivu province.

Fatalities and Rates

According to the latest data published by the Congolese Ministry of Health, 5,794 confirmed cases were detected in the outbreak and 2,786 people lost their lives. It was announced that the mortality rate is approximately 48 percent based on the total number of cases.

World Health Organization Warnings

The World Health Organization reported that the current outbreak is out of control and its spread rate is outpacing containment efforts. WHO warned that this outbreak could surpass the one experienced in West Africa between 2014 and 2016.

Challenges and Fighting Conditions

It is stated that the outbreak is spreading under extremely difficult conditions due to security problems, displacements, strikes by healthcare workers, and intense population movements. It is noted that a significant portion of cases and deaths occur within the community.

Vaccination and Measures Taken

Vaccination of healthcare workers and frontline personnel has begun in the Congo. Various measures, such as limiting public events and closing airports, are also being implemented in order to bring the outbreak under control.
